SUMMARY The decline in Bulgarian birth rates during the last fifty years is due mainly to the fall in births of parity 3 and higher orders. The results of measures taken by the government in 1968 and 1969 to reverse this trend have not been negligible but still are insufficient. A model of a possible rise in birth rates up to 1990 is constructed, using parity progression ratios. Some families are "at risk" of producing births of third and higher orders. Parity progression ratios are used to estimate third, fourth and fifth births successively, and these are summed to obtain the total number of expected births.
