SUMMARY After reaching a very high level at the end of the war (1960-62), infant mortality and child mortality dropped sharply at the period of the Liberation but, from 1963 to 1968, no clear trend is discernible although a slight decline can be noticed in urban areas. Infant mortality rates for the generation born in 1967-1968 reach 109 per thousand in cities and 1 32 in rural areas. There is a high risk of death during the first month, and especially in the first week of life. The rates for Northern Algeria reach 5,4 % and 2,1 % respectively.
