SUMMARY The expansion of Paris from 1825 to 1850 attracted a great number of foreigners; among them we find famous travellers, scholars, bankers, emigrant nobles, political refugees, etc... but, essentially, the movement concerned craftsmen and workers in the various branches of industry in Paris. Due to the lack of data on foreigners prior to the 1851 census, the present estimate is based on the Bulletin de Paris (a daily report of the Chief Commissioner of Police to the Home Secretary), the General Report of the Prefecture and the Statistics of industry in Paris, which give the results of a special survey.
