SUMMARY Living in urban agglomerations entails risks through increased contact between individuals, greater density of traffic, the accumulation of various types of pollution, proximity to animals (such as rats), the pace of urban life, lack of space etc. But such risks are difficult to measure, as they are confounded with age structure, sex and social status and above all by social and geographical mobility. (Individuals may die in places where they have not lived for very long or belong to an occupation which they have exercised for only a short time before death).
