Greece has moved on a great deal since the fall of the dictatorship of Colonels in 1974. Democracy has been consodlidated in an extremely pacific way. Joining the European Union has been a powerful catalyst to reform and internal modernization but adapting to the demands of accession has been difficult and painful. Resistance to change from certain organized interests has been a powerful factor in slowing down the adaptation process for a number of years. However, the forces for reform and modernization now have the upper hand, although there is still much to do.
