An examination of lithic technological variability at the site of Sheri Khan Tarakai, NWFP, Pakistan through experimental replication

In a previous paper Morris and Ashton suggested that the interpretation of the relationship between experimental and archaeological lithic datasets by Inizan et al. had resulted in misleading conclusions regarding levels of economic development at the site of Sheri Khan Tarakai, North- West Frontier Province, Pakistan. Morris andAshton questioned the use of copper in the lithic production strategy and suggested that the quality of the raw material bore greater effect on the choice of strategy. Since this publication a programme of experimental work has been conducted focussing on a range of lithic production techniques and their resulting technological attributes, utilising raw materials collected near the site of Sheri Khan Tarakai. The results of this experimental study are presented here. The study suggests that there is a clear differentiation, in terms of platform technical attributes, between the indirect percussion and pressure techniques, however, the type ofindentor used has little effect upon these attributes.Dans un article antérieur de Morris et Ashton (2001), il fut suggéré que le rapport établi entre les données de séries expérimentales et archéologiques (1994) par Inizan et al. avait abouti à des conclusions erronées concernant le niveau de développement économique du site de Sheri Khan Tarakai, situé dans la province de frontière Nord-Ouest, du Pakistan. Les auteurs remirent en cause l 'utilisation du cuivre dans la stratégie de production lithique proposée par Inizan et al. ; ils suggérèrent que la qualité du matériau brut influençait beaucoup plus le choix de la stratégie. Depuis cette publication, un programme de travail expérimental a été conduit dont le but était l 'étude d'une variété de techniques de production lithique et l'examen des attributs technologiques qui en résultèrent. Il fut fait usage de la matière première récupérée près du site de Sheri Khan Tarakai. Les résultats de ces expérimentations sont présentés ici. L'étude suggère une nette différenciation en terme d'attributs techniques de plan de frappe, entre les techniques de percussion indirecte et pression même si le type d 'indenteur a peu d 'effet sur ces attributs.Morris J.C., Ashton N., Lee K.
