This article deals with heat treatment on bone artefacts, the effect of which was to add colour and shine. The subject is worthy of attention because of the widespread presence of this form of heat treatment in Natufian and neolithic material in the Near East (at least 12 % of an assemblage was treated in this manner). With the limited evidence available, all aspects related to heating are examined : identification of heating, the technique employed and the possible origins of the different types of "patina". It is concluded that this was a stage in the manufacturing process that was deliberately applied to a selection of objects within certain assemblages.
