Three human skeletal collections from Bahrain, dating to the Middle Bronze Age, the Iron Age, and the Middle Islamic Period, are used to trace differences in diet and subsistence patterns through an analysis of dental pathology. The dental conditions recorded are attrition, caries, calculus, periodontal disease, antemortem tooth loss and dental fluorosis. Results indicate few changes in the diet between the Middle Bronze and Iron Ages, suggesting an agricultural based diet of non-abrasive food and a high intake of fermentable carbohydrates. In contrast, the diet of the Middle Islamic Period was more varied and abrasive, probably with higher intakes of meat, fish and grain products.
