The Upper Palaeolithic, and more especially the recent Upper Palaeolithic, yields lithic assemblages attesting to a great complexity as regards both technology and typology; it still remains unclear and is an obstacle to a precise definition of the passage from the Upper Palaeolithic to the Epipalaeolithic based on typological criteria. The author is consequently led to suggest a simplification of this complexity by extending the term "Upper Palaeolithic" until the Early Natufian, that is ca 12500 B.P..
