The Upper Palaeolithic to Epi-Palaeolithic Transition in the Levant

The Upper Palaeolithic, and more especially the recent Upper Palaeolithic, yields lithic assemblages attesting to a great complexity as regards both technology and typology; it still remains unclear and is an obstacle to a precise definition of the passage from the Upper Palaeolithic to the Epipalaeolithic based on typological criteria. The author is consequently led to suggest a simplification of this complexity by extending the term "Upper Palaeolithic" until the Early Natufian, that is ca 12500 B.P.. All the microlithic industries before the Natufian would actually correspond to human groups whose way of life and technologies are still belonging to the Upper Palaeolithic. The recent finds of Upper Palaeolithic assemblages lead to think that if the occurrence of a new phenomenon means the beginning of a new period in the prehistory of the Levant, the caesura would then happen after the Kebarian and should take place during the Natufian; however, it is more clearly marked in the non lithic cultural aspects. Some features are peculiar to the Natufian and the settlement pattern in a comparatively restricted area in the Levant enable to infer a "revolution" after the archaeological terminology; a new stage in the cultural history of the Levant would originate in this "Natufian revolution".Le Paléolithique supérieur, en particulier le Paléolithique supérieur récent, présente des assemblages lithiques témoignant d'une grande complexité tant sur le plan technologique que typologique; celle-ci qui reste mal comprise est une entrave à une définition précise de la transition Paléolithique supérieur/épipaléolithique fondée sur des critères typologiques. Aussi l'auteur est-il conduit à proposer de simplifier cette complexité en étendant le terme Paléolithique supérieur jusqu'au début du Natoufien, soit ca. 12500 b.p.. Toutes les industries microlithiques précédant le Natoufien correspondraient en réalité à des groupes humains dont le mode de vie et les technologies sont encore de type Paléolithique supérieur Les découvertes récentes d'assemblages microlithiques du Paléolithique supérieur font penser que si un phénomène nouveau signifie dans la préhistoire du Levant le début d'une période nouvelle, la césure serait alors plus tardive que le Kébarien et devrait se situer au cours du Natoufien; elle apparaît toutefois plus clairement dans les aspects non lithiques de la culture. Certains traits sont propres au Natoufien et la répartition des sites dans une zone relativement restreinte du Levant permettent d'inférer une « révolution » selon la terminologie archéologique; cette « révolution natoufienne » serait à l'origine d'une nouvelle phase de l'histoire culturelle au Levant.Gilead I.
