A geomorphological survey effected in conjunction with a campaign of prehistoric archaeological exploration in the Raqqa-Deir ez Zor and Jerablus-Qara Qozaq areas, have enabled us to retrace schematically the history of the Euphrates Quaternary and to propose correlations with other Syrian regions. It is towards the end of Middle Pleistocene and after a long phase of cutting by the river that the main terrace of the Euphrates was deposited (Ain Abou Jemaa formation). The succession of terraces is less developed and prehistoric finds less numerous there than on the Middle Orontes or the nahr el Kebir, but the downstream part of the Balikh and the Menbij-Jerablus area, however, display an important series of terraced pleistocene deposits that...
