Proselytism in India is both a stimulating theoretical problem and a burning political issue. Such zealous endeavors to win over converts are part of the Christian tradition, but have remained relatively marginal in Hinduism and even in Islam. Although Hinduism is generally described as non-missionary, the Hindu sectarian traditions have endowed it with an important missionary dimension. Islam, on the other hand, has not been as intent on making converts as has often been suggested : for a long time, only some Shiite sects have displayed a real missionary zeal. Hence the following theoretical question: in what conditions do religions become missionary? The intrusion of Christianity in India, following the implantation of the first merchant companies in the 16th century, and especially in the wake of the British conquest in the end of the 18th century, brought about defensive reactions at first, as in the case of Nepal. Later, strategies of imitation were set up, namely Hindu and Muslim forms of "counter-proselytism". This issue is devoted to a study of the emergence of such proselytizing tendencies in Hinduism and Islam. It includes a description of this process as well as an analysis of the theoretical questions it raises, among which one may cite the way in which Hinduism and Islam have had to define themselves in new terms so as to develop their new proselytizing strategies, and the influence of those new attitudes on the religious conflicts that have been plaguing the Indian subcontinent for a century.Le prosélytisme en Inde est à la fois une question théorique intriguante et un problème politique brûlant. Ce zèle pour gagner des convertis, partie intégrante du christianisme, n'est traditionnellement présent que de façon marginale dans l'hindouisme et même dans l'islam. Ainsi, l'hindouisme, considéré comme une religion non missionnaire, a pourtant connu une dimension prosélyte non négligeable avec ses traditions sectaires. Et l'islam n'a pas été aussi prosélyte qu'on l'a laissé entendre ; le zèle missionnaire y fut longtemps restreint à certaines sectes chiites. D'où la question théorique : dans quelles conditions les religions deviennent-elles prosélytes ? En second lieu, l'intrusion du christianisme avec les premières compagnies marchandes depuis le XVIe siècle, et surtout depuis la conquête britannique à la fin du XVIIIe, a provoqué d'abord des réactions de défense, comme l'illustre le cas du Népal ; puis des réactions d'imitation avec la naissance d'un contre-prosélytisme hindou et musulman. Cette montée du prosélytisme est le sujet principal de ce recueil qui la décrit et qui s'interroge sur ses implications théoriques : comment hindouisme et islam ont-ils dû se redéfinir pour construire des stratégies prosélytes ? Dans quelle mesure ces nouvelles attitudes influent-elles sur le déroulement des conflits religieux qu'a connus le sous-continent indien depuis un siècle ?El proselitismo en la India es, al mismo tiempo una cuestión teórica intrigante y un problema politico candente. El celo para ganar adeptos, componente de la realidad cristiana, no está presente tradicionalmente si no de una manera marginal en el hinduismo e incluso en el islam. Hoy, el hinduismo, considerado como una religion no misionera, ha desarrollado una dimensión proselitista a través de sus tradiciones sectarias. El islam no ha sido tan proselitista como ciertos autores lo han afirmado ; su celo misionero se circunscribió, durante mucho tiempo, a ciertas sectas chiítas. Esto nos plantea un jnterrogante teórico : ¿ en que condiciones las religiones se convierten en proselitistas ? En segundo lugar, la introducción del cristianismo con las primeras compañias comerciales desde el siglo XVI y, sobre todo, a partir de la conquista británica finales del siglo XVIII provocado en un primer momento, reacciones de defensa como lo ilustra el caso de Nepal; después reacciones de imitación con el nacimiento de un contra-proselitismo hindú y musulmán.
