About the Literary Field. History, Geography, Literary History. Written in the form of dialogue with the work by Pierre Bourdieu, The Rules of Art, Genesis and Structure of the Literary Field this article poses the question of whether it is possible to speak literary field prior to the 19th century and outside of France. Bourdieu's book, it seems, is beset by dilemma : on the one hand, this concept is presented as the theoretical basis of "science of literary works" and, on the other hand, the restrictions imposed with regard to its definition seem to limit its utilisation to the French context starting from the 19th century.
