«Footballization» of politics? Culture of consensus and football in Britain Patrick Mignon The idea of a «footballization» of society has been easily mentionned for the 1998' World Cup. It evokes the importance of football as a grid, for member of the society, to understand their experience and as a mean to act upon society : this idea is a way to analyze the connection between football and politics. From «Labour at prayer» in the fifties to the Labour's Charter for Football in 1995, through the «war to hooliganism» during the M.Thatcher's years, discourses about society and political prgrams show the importance of football in the fabric of British society. Through the topic of the political consensus, this paper aims to describe the way football takes place in the plans to reform British society.« Footballisation » de la politique ? Culture du consensus et football en Grande-Bretagne Patrick Mignon On évoque volontiers depuis la dernière Coupe du Monde de football l'idée d'une « footballisation » de la société dans le sens de l'importance prise par le football comme grille de lecture de leur expérience par les membres de la société et comme moyen privilégié d'action sur celle-ci : elle est une manière originale de traiter des relations entre football et politique. Du « Labour en prière » des années cinquante à la Charte du football du New Labour à la conquête du pouvoir en 1995 en passant par la « guerre au hooliganisme » menée durant les années Thatcher, discours sur la société et programmes politiques nous montrent l'importance accordée au football dans la « fabrique » de la société britannique.
