The Financial Market Crisis, by Jean Denizet At the heart of the stock market crash lies the US payments deficit, the correction of which is impeded by three obstacles. Firstly, half of US imports corne from countries which have not revalued their currency against the dollar. Secondly, there is now a net déficit in interest payments which is increasing and finally, the dollar's status as a world currency inhibits correction of this problem. The major countries hope the crisis will be mitigated by maintenance of the current US growth rate and growth acceleration in Europe and Japan.
