In the present unsettled period, the Federal Republic needs support in its foreign policy commitments and choices, and, for this, the attitude of France is particularly important. In order to reassure Germany, France should adopt certain obvious but consistent lines of conduct. It should unfailingly support Germany in matters concerning its security and that of Berlin. It should be made clear that no country better understands the German national problem than France. France should strengthen the already considerable political cooperation between the two and seek greater cooperation in matters of defence. The 1970s witnessed the emergence of certain matters of specifically « European » interest and in spite of differences of economic policy, mistrust of the French socialist experiment in Bonn and the German need for link with Washington, ties between France and Germany must remain strong and steadfast.Face à l'Allemagne de 1982, quelle peut être la politique française ? Dans la période d'inquiétude qu'elle traverse, la RFA a besoin d'être confortée dans ses engagements et ses choix. L'attitude de la France pèse dans ce domaine d'un poids particulier. Assurer l'Allemagne d'un indéfectible soutien en ce qui concerne sa sécurité et celle de Berlin, rappeler que nul mieux que la France ne peut comprendre sa situation nationale, renforcer une coopération politique déjà très étroite, approfondir la coopération en matière de défense, telles sont les lignes évidentes, mais lourdes de significations, qu'il convient de toujours adopter. Les années 70 ont vu émerger des intérêts européens « propres », et, quelles que soient les divergences qui existent entre les deux politiques économiques et la profonde méfiance suscitée à Bonn par l'expérience socialiste française, malgré la nécessité pour la RFA du lien Bonn-Washington, il y a place désormais pour un noyau franco-allemand.Adrien Bernard.
