The Euro-Left between the Euro-Missiles and Poland, by Pierre Hassner The Euro-Left is in a contradictory position. It accepts the Western critique of Eastern bloc action in Poland yet agrees with the Eastern bloc that Western sanctions are to be condemned. In fact, this impotent brand of impartiality is an attitude which risks infecting Western Europe as a whole, so long as it tries to achieve its own detente without being able to ensure its own defense. Thus the dilemma of Berlinguer and the Italian Communist Party faces the entire Euro-Left. Should priority be given to peace or to freedom?
