Egyptianity and Panarabism, by Philippe Rondot After Anouar al-Sadate's tragic death, appear, among other questions, those of Egypt's immediate future, of the future of the Egypto-Israelian peace and of a larger settlement of the middle-eastern problem. The issues depend on whether Egypt can and wants - or not - to take its place again in the Arab community. National counsciousness has been vivid for a long time in Egypt, fed by the revolts against foreign domination, first French, then British. Cairo, a hospitable town for Arab intellectuals of all origins, became naturally the capital of nationalism and arabism. Gamal Abdel Nasser took opportunity of that conjoncture to satisfy his panarabic dream and his ambition of making of Cairo the metropolis of the Arab world. This hegemonic will had been frustrated by the defeat of June 1967. His successor, Anouar al-Sadate followed for some time the same way, until the war of October 1973, after which, with a minimum of advantages, he started negociating with Israel. He could, after that, dedicate himself to more specific national undertakings. The priority given to egyptianity went growing while the Egypto-Israelian peace process was progressing and while, by reaction, an Arab community was organized against Egypt and excluding her. This self-focusing, imposed by the circumstances and finally well accepted by a people proud of its egyptianity, does not exclude a come back to arabism to which many Egyptians are attached.Egyptianité et panarabisme, par Philippe Rondot La disparition tragique d'Anouar al-Sadate pose, entre autres questions, celle de l'avenir immédiat de l'Egypte, celle du sort de la paix égypto-israélienne et enfin celle relative aux chances d'un règlement proche-oriental plus étendu. Les réponses à ces questions découleront de celle qui sera apportée, dans les mois qui viennent, à l'interrogation que chacun se pose : l'Egypte peut-elle, et va-t-elle, retrouver sa place au sein de la communauté arabe ? La conscience nationale égyptienne est ancienne. Elle a été alimentée par les diverses révoltes contre la présence étrangère, française puis britannique. Le Caire, ville accueillante pour les intellectuels arabes de toutes origines, devint naturellement la capitale du nationalisme et de l'arabisme. Gamal Abdel Nasser utilisa cette conjoncture pour satisfaire ses ambitions de faire du Caire la métropole du monde arabe, et ses desseins de panarabisme. Cette volonté hégémonique fut cependant mise en échec par la déconfiture de juin 1967. Son successeur, Anouar al-Sadate, poursuivit quelque temps dans la même voie jusqu'au moment où, ayant obtenu par la guerre d'octobre 1973, un minimum d'avantages pour s'engager dans un processus de règlement négocié avec Israël, il put se consacrer à des tâches plus spécifiquement nationales. La primauté donnée à l'égyptianité s'accentue au fur et à mesure que s'élaborait la paix égypto-israélienne et que, par réaction, s'organisait contre l'Egypte une communauté arabe qui avait décidé de l'en exclure. Ce repli sur soi, imposé par les circonstances, et finalement bien accepté par un peuple fier de son égyptianité, n'exclut pas un retour à l'arabisme auquel beaucoup d'Egyptiens sont attachés.Rondot Philippe.
