Summary : The gestural representation of actions in childhood. Research up to now examining the evolution of the gestural representation of actions as a figurative activity has had trouble in defining coherent levels of evolution. This has led certain authors to suggest that figurative activity evolues independently front general cognitive development. The present research shows that these difficulties result from not taking into consideration the signifier and the signified of the gestural activity. Using a modified experimental paradigm 320 children aged 4-12 years were tested. A coherent evolution of behavior divisible into 4 distinct levels was observed.
