Summary : Vocalization and the sequential memory of pictures and words. Pictures and words were compared in two sequential memory tasks with two vocalization conditions, with loud voice and with suppression of subvocalization. The verbal recall of order and the reconstruction of order were better for the pictures than for the words ; this confirms previous research (Lieury & Calvez, 1986) with lists of 3 to 8 items. Thus the image code can integrale, like the verbal code, some sequential information and the hypothesis of a non sequential processing system for pictures (Paivio & Csapo, 1969, 1971) seems to be invalidated.
