Summary : Is a child's initial comprehension of comparative sentences relational ? The question asked in the title is approached in consideration of the studies dealing with the child's comprehension of quantitative or dimensional comparative sentences in English. Different dues (non linguistic strategies, extensive responses) and different criteria (comparative clause, recipro-cation with antonyms or negation, comparative or equative nature of relations and their extension) are examined. The analysis shows the incertain-ties that remain about the comparative comprehension of sentences and several steps corresponding to their relational comprehension.
