Analyse de 22 catégories sémantiques du français : organisation catégorielle, lexique et représentation

Summary : An analysis of 22 semantic French categories : categorica organization, lexicon and representation. The purpose of the present paper is to give elements of an answer to the following questions : — How are semantic categories represented and organized ? on what dimensions ? — Is there one common identical organization for all categories ? — Is the concept of prototype a valid one across all categories ? — How imagery may contribute to categorial organization ? 22 categories were investigated : animals, trees, flowers, insects, vegetables, metals, birds, fishes ; weapons, beverages, buildings, musical instruments, toys, furniture, tools, containers, kitchen aids, vehicules, clothing ; professions and sports, which respectively refer to natural objects, artifacts, and human activities. We analyse here the data from two production tasks which were first computed as categorial norms : we first asked Ss to give the names of exemplars belonging to each category « as they came to their minds ». In the second task, we replicated this procedure with a change in the instructions « we asked Ss to first image the objects from each category, before naming them. » The main results front the present investigation show that the 22 categories are differently organized : 1) Linguistic factors such as the lexical availability of the label cannot be excluded as determining the patterns of productions for some categories (such as Buildings, Professions, Toys) ; 2) Prototypes give an adequate description of the categorial organization, particularly for categories of natural objects (such as Trees, Flowers, Fruits, Vegetables...) ; 3) Figurative aspects of perceptual objects may contribute to the organization of the corresponding concepts, but functionnal properties have also to be tahen into account (particularly for artifacts such as Tools, Furniture...). Key-words : Representation, categorization, lexicon, imagery.Résumé Le but de la présente recherche est de contribuer à identifier les principes de l'organisation des représentations en mémoire. Nous avons collecté les productions d'exemplaires appartenant à 22 catégories sémantiques, dénotant soit des objets (naturels ou fabriqués), soit des activités humaines et ce à partir de deux consignes différentes : l'une insiste sur la production de mots, l'autre sur la production d'une image préalablement à la dénomination. Les résultats montrent : — une importante stabilité interindividuelle, permettant d'assigner un statut de « normes » à ces productions verbales ; — une importante diversité entre catégories sur les critères que nous avons analysés ; — la non-exclusivité des déterminations linguistiques (lexicales) dans la distribution des réponses des sujets ; — la contribution possible des représentations imagées dans l'organisation de certaines catégories. Ces facteurs n'épuisant cependant pas la richesse des déterminants de la structuration catégorielle, ce travail suggère en conclusion de nouvelles investigations des déterminations de l'organisation des représentations cognitives humaines.
