Summary In order to distinguish the most flexible aspects of oculo-motor activity during reading, eight subjects were constrained to read at half their normal reading speed. Under these conditions, mean fixation durations slightly increase because of the presence of an increased number of particularly long fixations. However, the main effect is a large (64 %) increase in the number of saccades. Loops of backtvards and forwards movements, resembling phases of waiting, are found.
