Summary It is supposed that knowledge that a response is right or wrong regulates subsequent learning by instigating different study activities. In two experiments the methods « anticipation » and « study-test » (or « recall y>) were compared in paired-associate learning. In both methods the discrepancy between a given response and subsequent presentation of the to-be-studied item provides feedback, but it is immediate in « anticipation » and delayed in « study-test ». In experiment I with self-paced learning, subjects spent more time in studying an item after a wrong response or an omission that after a right response.
