Summary The purpose of this experiment was to study the influence of modality of presentation on the learning of a series of eight sentences. Each sentence had seven elements : three nuclear elements and four modifiers. Every subject received ten trials. In group I (cumulative method), the three nuclear elements of each sentence were presented at the first two trials, the modifiers being introduced progressively over successive trials ; in group II (classical method), ail the elements of each sentence were presented at the first trial. The two groups showed identical performances at the final learning trial ; but after a one-week delay, group I had a better performance than group II.
