Summary We formulated the hypothesis that the empirical schema of an object is built up during childhood and is subject to two rules : on the one hand, it accords a privilege to the fronto-parallel orientation of the object; on the other hand, it requires the presence of certain details characterising this object. Various familiar, concrete objects : toy houses, dolls, cups, were presented on a rotating plateau. After seeing the object front every angle, the child chose front amongst 8 photographs, the one most like the model.
