Abstract. The investigation of English agricultural production and land productivity has been hampered by the lack of data for the period from the early years of the eighteenth century when probate inventories become scarce up to the collection by the government of annual agricultural statistics in 1866. One place to look for data are the records of the farmers themselves. Several thousand sets of farm accounts, notebooks, diaries and the like have been preserved in various repositories around England. By their very nature, these records are idiosyncratic and difficult to use. Because of this they have been largely ignored by historians.
