The consumption of grains in the Early Roman Empire : the difficulties of a quantitative approach. This article examines both the difficulties involved in writing a quantitative history of food consumption in ancient Rome, given the paucity of documentation and the need to move beyond the vagueness which currently characterizes this area of economic history. Drawing on the main sources concerning this question and a number of recent studies ; I provide an estimation of the total grain consumption during the Early Roman Empire ; while certainly hypothetical, this estimation is nevertheless probable.
