La consommation de céréales dans la Rome du Haut-Empire [Les difficultés d’une approche quantitative]

The consumption of grains in the Early Roman Empire : the difficulties of a quantitative approach. This article examines both the difficulties involved in writing a quantitative history of food consumption in ancient Rome, given the paucity of documentation and the need to move beyond the vagueness which currently characterizes this area of economic history. Drawing on the main sources concerning this question and a number of recent studies ; I provide an estimation of the total grain consumption during the Early Roman Empire ; while certainly hypothetical, this estimation is nevertheless probable. I also explore the implications of this proposal both for knowledge of the total population of the city of Rome during this period and for the geographic and categorical origins of grains destined for the capital (grain for taxation, for commerce).Cet article voudrait montrer à la fois les difficultés qu'il y a à écrire une histoire quantitative de la consommation de vivres dans la Rome antique, étant donné la pauvreté de la documentation et la nécessité pourtant de sortir du flou dans lequel on cantonne pour l'instant ce domaine de l'histoire économique. À partir du dossier des principales sources et d'un certain nombre d'études récentes sur la question, on parvient à proposer une estimation de la consommation totale de céréales dans la Rome du Haut-Empire, estimation certes hypothétique, mais cependant plausible. On esquisse enfin les conséquences d'une telle proposition, tant sur notre connaissance du chiffre total de population de la ville de Rome à cette époque, que sur celle de la provenance géographique et catégorielle (blé des impôts ? du commerce libre ?) des céréales destinées à la capitale.Virlouvet Catherine.
