One of the most striking particularities of the Roman Empire must be identified in its writing of its chancery acts in two official languages, with very different diplomatic traditions : as well as the Greek practice had to be polished and written by erudite epistolographers, in the Roman one the most important was the precise recording of the authority's order. In need of Greek equivalents to their most necessary juridical and ideological concepts, the men in charge of the writing had to make a number of exchanges between Latin and Greek.
