In the first millennium B.C., the Phoenician cities were successively dominated by Assyrian, neo-babylonian, Greek and Roman Empires. Three main phases characterized the evolution of this domination : a first phase of independence which lasted until 744, a second one elapsing from Tiglat-pileser III who has integrated some of these cities into an Assyrian province and left the other ones relatively autonomous, and a third phase starting at the Hellenistic period.
