Problem of Etruscan origins has always been matter of great debate among scientists - already in classical times, as shown by Dionysus of Halicarnassus. But the debate was not then a purely scientific one. Uphold an opinion about Etruscan origins means adopt a position about the Etruscan themselves. Thus for Greek writers defend the theory of a Pelasgian or Lydian origin (i.e. connecting Etruscan with Greek universe) means be favourable to them ; defend that of autochtony (i.e. making them purely Italian, barbarian) means be adverse.
