Abstract From the Rebel Congo to Plundered Zaire. — Why were violent solutions "rejected" during the democratic transition in the last days of Mobutu's regime, even though violent methods had been used just after independence? In three successive cycles, these past "wars", in each case set off by the population, led to violent repression. Owing to these experiences, people were wary of strong-arm methods and consi-dered them to be "forms of illusion" that caused more problems than they settled. For a long time, Mobutu's regime endeavored to deliberately keep this memory of the past alive, to discredit violence from "the bottom" and to use this attitude as a means for legitimating violence from "the top".
