The structural and theological significance of the quotation formulas of John

In recent years there has been an increase of interest in the question of how the Jewish scriptures were understood and employed in Johannine tradition. The purpose of this paper is to review some of the more significant trends in scholarship and to explore the possibility of the need for a reassessment of John and the Old Testament in general and, more specifically, to explore the possible need to reassess our understanding of the extent to which Isaiah\u27s Servant Songs may have influenced the fourth gospel. The paper is divided into three parts. The first part briefly looks at the broader question of John and the Old Testament, particularly with reference to his quotation formulas.
