How much of the Johannine community can we find in the fourth gospel? : a critical analysis of R. Brown and J.L. Martyn

In a conference devoted to higher criticism and the evangelical, it seems warranted to examine yet another approach to the Fourth Gospel. Raymond Brown and J.L. Martyn are no strangers to Johannine studies and both work together nearby in New York. They are hardly alone and stand with a host of other scholars who have made new inroads into the study of the Johannine community. They promise two new insights: (a) First, the Johannine literature is actually a window allowing us to observe a church\u27s self-identity and belief; (b) and second, this literature lets us view the history of the community -- its origins, development, crises, and finally, its dissolution.
