John the Baptist came preaching in the wilderness of Judea. The wilderness was not far from his home. It is that part of Judea west of the Dead Sea and east of Bethlehem, Tekoah, and Hebron. It also includes a narrow strip to the north of the sea. Isaiah had prophesied of one “crying in the wilderness.” John is recognized as the one fulfilling Isaiah\u27s promise. It was very natural for him to begin his ministry there, because he was reared in the area. The wilderness was also an appropriate setting for his preparatory message. In addition it fit his appearance, habits, and illustrations; for they were all of the desert
