The Common Sense tradition of antebellum Presbyterianism was a confluence of Scottish philosophy, Reformed confessional ism (Westminster), and evangelical pietism. The first two are the easiest to isolate and so I have concentrated upon their influence. The point of this study is to demonstrate their effect upon the first principles of Presbyterian philosophy and hermeneutics. There can be little doubt that the attempt of theologians to bring together these two factors caused all but the most consistent thinkers to arrive at conclusions which could not be sustained by their original premise.
