Print Print Print

This exhibition in the Reid Building at Glasgow School of Art features recent work made by staff at Glasgow School of Art who use traditional printmaking processes and techniques. Print Print Print brings together a wide variety of screenprints, etchings, lithographs, monoprints and woodcuts. This exhibition was curated to showcase examples of work by GSA staff across the School of Fine Art who were actively involved in the use of traditional print techniques and processes. The work I made for this exhibition called "The Hidden Desert" was a new departure in that I was attempting to utilise a new way of making through lithography where I was attempting to make an optical effect on the finished work by superimposing a cut out shape of the same printed image, mounted around 4mm above the surface of the original print. Upon viewing at a close level, one can see exactly the same image, albeit doctored from the original, superimposed on top. The subject matter was taken from news footage of the Zaatari refugee camp in Jordan and showed the sprawling temporary accommodation spreading as far as the eye could see. This work was influenced by the writings of anthropologist Michel Agier who writes extensively about the situation with migration and forced internment. The work which developed from this research was concerned with the land use effect of these building methods, the temporary nature of accommodation and the possible permanence of these camps evolving as a result of continuing conflicts. Temporary shelters thrown up to manage a crisis but all too often these have become the permanent structures for people to live indefinitely
