The wear resistance of Fe-based composite coating is significantly related with the character of carbides and matrix, which could be strongly affected by C content in it. In this work, the Fe-based composite coatings with different C contents were prepared. The microstructure and phase structure of the coatings were analyzed by scanning electron microscope (SEM) equipped with an energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) and X-ray diffractometer (XRD). The hardness and wear resistance of the coatings were determined. Then the hardness and brittleness of carbon poor niobium carbides were calculated by first principles calculation.
