Single Co adatoms adsorbed on a double-layer NaCl film supported by Cu(111) were negatively charged after applying a positive voltage pulse to the sample in a scanning tunnelling microscope. Density functional calculations showed that the magnetic moment of Co changed from 3 mu(B) to 2.2 mu(B) after charge state manipulation.National Natural Science Foundation of China [21522301, 21373020, 21403008, 61321001, 21433011, 61271050]; Ministry of Science and Technology [2014CB239302, 2013CB933404]; Research Fund for the Doctoral Program of Higher Education [20130001110029]; Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) [SFB 677]SCI(E)PubMedARTICLEsmhou@pku.edu.cn; yongfengwang@pku.edu.cn4216566-165694
