To process global query under distributed GIS, a novel algorithm named hybrid heuristic optimization algorithm (HHOA) designed for distributed spatial query optimization was derived in this paper. The HHOA algorithm is based on spatial query language (SQL) equivalence transformation and is designed in a hybrid join strategy with both direct join and semi-join. The characteristics of spatial query are taken into account as well. Based on HHOA an actual distributed spatial query processor was accomplished, which indicates that the algorithm provides an effective way for distributed spatial query processing and optimization.EI0101013-10181
