The article presents a general view on the reception of German literature from the very beginning of the introduction of the German language into China up to the end of the twentieth century. In other words, it covers the whole of the twentieth century, in several phases with different special features. Since Chinese history in the twentieth century was full of great events, it had important influences upon the social life and development of Chinese society. It also affected the translation and the introduction of German literature in China.
