The impersonal theory of poetry, initiated by T. S. Eliot, was an important theory of modem poetics. It has also influenced the post modernistic writings and criticism. Eliot's as well as Yeats' viewpoints on this theory are commented in this paper. Furthermore, the author applies this theory to analysis of a piece of post-modernistic poem, Sylvia Plath's "Lady Lazarus", concluding that any successful literary work is to be balanced between personal and impersonal elements.
