An adaptive intraframe DPCM coding for broadcast television luminance signals with prediction based on minimum slope direction is presented. Every actual pel (picture element) is considered as inactive or active from an activity value of its previous pel. The prediction coefficients are selected according to the prediction based on minimum slope direction at the previous pel. Two non-uniform quantizers, which correspond to inactive and active pels, are designed from masking functions obtained in subjective tests. The minimum number of quantization levels needed for natural test pictures and a resolution chart is 14 and 18, respectively.Engineering, Electrical & ElectronicSCI(E)EI0ARTICLE12330-3363
