Theoretical concerns about the use of cemented or press-fit stems in revision total knee arthroplasty (TKA) include stress shielding with adverse effects on prosthesis fixation. Revision TKA components are commonly stemmed to protect the limited autogenous bone stock remaining. Revision procedures with the use of stems can place abnormal stresses through even normal bone by their constrained design, type of materials and fixation method and may contribute for bone loss.
