Recent achievements on the description of the magnetic moments in the framework of the covariant density functional theory are reviewed. The contributions from the core polarization, the medium effects and the configuration mixing are respectively taken into account by the time-odd fields, the one-pion exchange current and the corrections due to coupling with particle-hole configuration to 1p-1h and 2p-2h orders. As examples, the relativistic description for the isoscalar and the isovector magnetic moments are demonstrated for LS closed-shell nuclei O-16 and Ca-40 plus or minus one nucleon as well as jj closed-shell nuclei (208)pb plus or minus one nucleon.
