The lifetime of the 2(1)(+) state in Os-174 was measured in a fast timing experiment using LaBr3(Ce) crystals for gamma-ray detection. The excellent energy resolution in conjunction with the superb time properties of the new material allows for the reliable handling of the background, thus providing very precise lifetime values. The resulting B(E2, 2(1)(+) -> 0(1)(+)) transition strength is discussed in relation to the systematics of the previously reported B(E2, 2(1)(+) -> 0(1)(+)) values in the Os isotopes and compared to predictions of several models.
