WTO Membership and china#39;s Agricultural Difficulties

Following Deng Xiaoping's open-door policy in the late 1970s,China's accession to the World Trade Organisation(WTO)on 11 November 2001 was the second most important change in the country's economic policy regime.As part of the membership deal,the Chinese government promised to introduce foreign competition to several key sectors of the Chinese economy,of which the most controversial was agriculture.While China's WTO membership did bring about negative effects on its fragile agricultural sector,the deterioration of China's agricultural difficulties and its already strained statepeasant relations was nonetheless also attributable to unresolved issues such as heavy tax and financial burdens borne by the peasants,irrigation,and illicit land confiscation.
