Study on the impact of large-scale infrastructure on urban development: A case study of Kunming's New Airport's construction

After Financial Crisis, in order to satisfy the expansion of domestic demand, Chinese government invested 4 trillion RMB to China's livelihood projects, such as infrastructure, ecological environment construction and post-disaster reconstruction to promote economic growth. As the fourth largest aviation hub in China, Kunming International Airport is the only started construction during the national 'Eleventh Five-Year Plan' period. Based on the construction of the new airport in Kunming, the impact of large-scale infrastructure on urban development is discussed in this paper. As an important external traffic of Kunming Airport Economic Zone, the construction of the new airport of Kunming enhanced the external links, effectively promoting the development of urban economics in Kunming. At the same time, thanks to the new airport's construction, the role Kunming played of regional aviation network significantly enhanced and the linkage with East and Southeast Asia became closer and closer. As a transit hub for the international airport, its effect has been strengthened. In addition, the construction of the new airport optimized the industrial sector, successfully gathered the population, industry and information, and promoted the development of surrounding villages and towns, making it the most major growth pole of the regional axis system.
