The dynamic behavior of 6060T5 aluminum ring systems subjected to impact loading was experimentally and numerically studied to confirm the energy absorption mechanism of ring systems. The experiments were conducted on a modified SHPB test system. The variations of the incident wave and the transmitted wave, as well as the deformation histories, were recorded by a high-speed camera. The calculational parameters were calibrated based on the experimental results. Results for various working conditions show that ring systems are efficient energy absorbers with the impact energy mainly dissipated by the bending plastic deformation.
