Prevalence and risk factors of cardiac arrhythmias in hospitalized patients with arterial hypertension

Background: Arterial hypertension is associated with cardiac arrhythmia with high prevalence. The aim of this study was to investigate prevalence and risk factors of cardiac arrhythmias in hypertensive patients. The aim of this study was to investigate prevalence and risk factors of cardiac arrhythmias in hypertensive patients. Design: The inpatient medical records of patients with cardiac arrhythmias in the People's Hospital of Peking University were retrospectively analyzed in our present study. All patients were divided into hypertension and non-hypertension groups. Their clinical characteristics were compared and the risk factors were also investigated. Results: Univariate analysis demonstrated that arterial hypertension was associated with atrial fibrillation(AF) (OR: 1.76; 95% CI: 1.53-2.02; P < 0.01), atrioventricular block (OR: 1.95; 95% CI: 1.62-2.36; P < 0.01), left bundle branch block(LBBB) (OR: 2.05; 95% CI: 1.19-3.53; P < 0.01) and sinus bradycardia (OR: 2.10; 95% CI: 1.77-2.50; P < 0.01). Multivariate analysis demonstrated that cardiac arrhythmias was independently associated with diabetes mellitus, cerebrovascular disease, sleep apnea syndrome, hyperthyroidism, coronary heart disease, congestive heart failure, rheumatic heart disease, age, female sex, high triglyceride and high serum uric acid (P < 0.01), high total cholesterol(P = 0.03), high creatinine and low serum albumin (P=0.01). Conclusions: Arterial hypertension is associated with atrial fibrillation, left bundle branch block, atrioventricular block and sinus bradycardia. The risk factors included diabetes mellitus, cerebrovascular disease, sleep apnea syndrome, heart failure, hyperthyroidism, rheumatic heart disease, older age and female sex. Furthermore, an independent relationship between high lipid, low serum albumin, high Serum uric acid, high creatinine and cardiac arrhythmias was also confirmed.Medicine, General & InternalSCI(E)1ARTICLE129-34
