While the research of hypoxic-ischemic injury to the central nervous system has been focused on neurons, astrocytes are also critically involved in and contribute to the hypoxic-ischemic process. The role these cells play appears to be more and more important. There are considerable progress in characterizing the pathophysiological alterations of these cells during hypoxic-ischemic brain damage.PubMed03217-213
